Text Messaging (SMS)

An Up and Coming Marketing Tool

Text messaging is little used compared to other types of social media marketing but it has the potential to be far reaching in its effects.

Text messaging is simply using a cellular telephone to send a written message to another person. It is becoming increasingly popular especially amongst younger people. In fact, because of its increased popularity, more and more people are investing in unlimited text packages with the cell phone service. As more and more people opt for this type of unlimited coverage, text message marketing is likely to pick up. Right now many cell phone users have limited amounts of texts each month or have no text coverage and have to pay for each one. People who are in this situation are more resistant to receiving text messages as it will cost them. No one wants to pay to be advertised to.

Text message (SMS) or Short Message Service is used very little in marketing at the moment, however there is a good possibility that this will change very soon. Right now text messages are almost always opened and read because there are so few of them. This makes them much more effective than most direct mail and email marketing campaigns.

If your business is looking to market using text messaging, be sure to keep several things in mind. Send short messages as long ones are tedious on a small screen. Remember to refer the reader back to your webpage for additional information. Don't overwhelm your potential new client by requesting a cell phone number. Instead give them a code to call in order to get a discounted deal on their purchase. This is more likely to be used and leaves a good impression. Remember to not overdo it on the frequency of texts. Keep it short and to the point, so people are likely to want them to keep on coming.

Considering the fact that practically everyone today has a cell phone, it is surprising that marketers have not jumped on the text message bandwagon and began intensive advertising that way. As a B2B business you may want to consider occasionally texting existing customers and people who have opted into your text message news feature. Keep them up to date on new things you are offering and specials that are upcoming. By doing it this way, others will see your text message and will want to be on the list for next year.
